Effective September 1, 2006, the TC program has made a pool of funds available to help online students who are not teaching assistants to travel for scholarly purposes. This year (2006-7) the amount is $250 per student with the possibility of matching money from the grad school. If you wish to take advantage of these funds, you'll have to submit a travel request to Daryl Lynn Davalos (dl.davalos@ttu.edu), noting that you'll be traveling on the Technical Communication Distance Learning account (0675 44 1256).
The Texas Tech Graduate School provides matching funds in most cases: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/gradschool/Travel.php. You should always ask them for matching funds as long as they are available.
You may use these funds to travel to conferences (primarily to give a paper or to assist the conference organizers) or to travel for the purposes of conducting field or library research. The Graduate School gives matching funds ONLY if you are giving a paper. You cannot use these funds to travel to Lubbock to attend the May workshop, nor may you double dip into the travel funds earmarked for GPTI (teaching assistants).
In order to receive travel funds, you must submit official receipts. Anything less than "official" and you will not receive funds.
You can also ask for mileage in your own car from point to point, which will be reimbursed at a standard mileage rate (45 cents, currently) for official travel. You will need to provide proof you actually went to the destination (hotel receipts, conference receipts, and so on).
