Independent Study:  ENGL 5300

Purpose

English 5300 will be used to pursue specialized work beyond the minimum number of hours required for the degree. It may also be used to provide advanced teaching apprenticeships or to prevent severe hardships on students (for example, when graduation will be delayed because a regular course is not scheduled).

Course Requirements

The minimum requirements for English 5300 are uniform across the department when the course is used to pursue specialized work. They are (1) a major written project; and (2) either a final examination or a body of notes useful for future reference.

Application Procedure

Application for English 5300 must be made to the Director of Graduate Studies in TCR at least one week in advance of the semester in which the course is to be taken. The Director will then circulate the application to the Graduate Studies Committee for approval.

Application consists of

  1. a rationale prepared by the student demonstrating that the proposed 5300 is in the student's best academic interest;
  2. a letter of endorsement from a Graduate Faculty member willing to direct the 5300; and
  3. a course outline.
