Technical Communication Program

Mission Statement

The mission of the Technical Communication and Rhetoric Program is to facilitate communication in action in a complex society and to advance the interdisciplinary study of rhetoric, science, and technology. In applying this research, we aim to educate our students as scholars and practitioners, to strengthen the field through dissemination of knowledge, and to serve the community through professional leadership.

Texas Tech offers degree programs in technical communication at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. The Master of Arts in Technical Communication and the PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric are available both as resident and online programs.

We teach courses at the sophomore  and junior levels that help students in various majors develop their writing abilities.

An active chapter of the Society for Technical Communication complements classroom instruction. Fifteen tenure-line faculty specialize in technical communication and rhetoric, offering expertise in a range of areas.

Facilities include five computer classrooms and a usability lab with video editing capabilities. Job placement for graduates of all programs is excellent.

For an introduction to the career of technical communicator, please see " A Week in the Life of a Technical Communicator," developed by Texas Tech alumni at National Instruments in Austin.
