Submission Guidelines
Harbinger, student journal of Arts and Letters, accepts submissions of all creative work. While some genres have an established record with Harbinger, we will review any creative work to see if there is a way for us to include it in the next issue. Genre editors are on staff to review submissions of essay, fiction, film, music, non-fiction, poetry and visual art. Surprise us. Additionally, the submission of work which does or attempts to blur or cross the lines between these genres–hopefully creating or exploring some new sort of space–is highly encouraged. Payment is two copies of the issue in which the artist is published.

Simultaneous submissions are acceptable--but notify us immediately by email if a piece is accepted elsewhere. We discourage the submission of previously published work, but may include it under unique circumstances--particularly for work self-published in limited quantities.

Current submission periods:

September 1 to December 1 for the next issue.

Cover Letter
All submissions should include a cover letter (either in paper copy or as a .doc or .rft file) including contact information (a valid email at which notifications/questions/revision-requests may be received is essential,) no more than 4 sentences of biographical information about the artist(s,) a list of pieces submitted, as well as (if relevant) information about the dimensions, year created, and media of a given piece--and a brief (1-2 sentence) explanation of how each piece addresses or embodies concepts of difference or diversity.

Email Format
All submissions submitted by email should have a subject line in the following format:
(Genre: Full Artist Name). Please attach all pieces, including the cover letter, as separate files.

Non-English Content
Harbinger gladly accepts the submission of any and all content in languages other than English. Please keep in mind, however, that our ability to publish such content is restricted by our ability to properly evaluate the content--which is essentially limited by the local availability of students or faculty fluent in the language in question. We can make no promises, then, but will do all we can to properly evaluate your submission.

To help us evaluate these submissions, please include the language and, if relevant, any important information on the dialect in which the piece was written, created or recorded. Also, the submitter is responsible for providing an English-language translation of any words in the piece. Because Harbinger is published for a mostly English-speaking audience, translations of non-English pieces will be published alongside with the original content.

Translations of work by an artist other than the translator will also be reviewed, with acceptance pending the successful negotiation of relevant copyright issues.

Poetry and Prose
Poetry and prose may only be submitted to Harbinger by email to techharbinger@gmail.com.

In the top right corner of each piece include the title, page number, and number of pages (even for one-page pieces.)

Include no more than 10 pages of poetry or 10 pages of prose per submission (only one genre per submission, and only one submission per genre, please), with no more than one piece to a page. Elaborate fonts or text colors are highly discouraged.

Harbinger also welcomes submissions in languages other than English. Since Harbinger is, however, produced for a primarily English-speaking audience, such work is accepted only when the original and a suitable translation are provided.

Visual Art
Due to file size, visual art may only be submitted in hard copy. CD or DVD are both acceptable hard formats, and may be mailed or delivered in person. If, for some reason, you are unable to submit in either format, email techharbinger@gmail.com and we'll see what accomodations can be made.

Include no more than 10 images per submission.

Submission Delivery
Submissions needing delivery may be delivered by mail or in person. In person, bring submissions to room 212, the main English-department office, and ask a secretary to place it in Harbinger's box. Whether delivering in person or by mail, please address your envelope to the relevant editor (don't forget to mark envelopes containing discs to ensure their safety.) and mail to:
