Response to Hallie Lemon
What I find fascinating here, Hallie, is the development of discourse that
might not necessarily take place in a classroom setting. It is
interesting to see the various types of posts from the students you use as
example. Equally, it is nice to see the stereotypical roles broken in
some ways as Heather's 2nd entry demonstrates a more rational appeal and
both Paul and Sully clearly take the emotional stance. Considering the
subject matter and the medium used to relay comments, I'm not surprised to
see more "forceful responses" than you might typically receive.
I am curious as to whether or not you have ever had a
female-originated/instigated argument? If you have not, I wonder to what
extent do females participate in lists debates? I have had many female
originated debates yet the majorities are conducted without personal
attacks (unlike James from your example).
When I utilize class lists or bulletin boards, I am always amazed by the
online personalities that emerge. I hear many voices
that
I might not normally be privy to in the class setting, yet I have
consistently noticed a marginal difference between those who actively
participate and those who do not. I had hoped to empower all, but what
I've found is that only a few exude power behind a screen. I wonder how
we could change this?
