Monday-Morning MOO:
Teaching Strategies Across Time and Distance

Kristian Fuglevik, Janet Cross, Joel A. English, Claudine Keenan, Peter Sands, and Sharon Cogdill

The demand for "hands on" MOO workshops at Computers and Writing Conferences is always high, and conference attendees often seek workshops that go "beyond the basics" to integrate these vibrant, dynamic environments into their own courses. This full day workshop will lead participants through theory and practice, offering a guided tour through several educational MOOs as an overview to ongoing work by: exploring colleagues' MOO projects, their pedagogy, practical concerns, and visions for future development; exploring student work and meeting some of the students who have benefitted from this environment.

In this workshop, participants who are already familiar with how to "speak" in MOOs will learn how to use some of the powerful active/collaborative teaching features of MOOs using slide projectors, navigating and building rooms, and customizing interactive objects. All participants will practice building virtual spaces to reflect their own course themes, readings, and goals. Participants in this session will create their own teaching materials, learn strategies for using these materials effectively, and be able to return, use, and further develop their MOO spaces well after the conference has ended.

Workshop organizers will encourage participants to form teams and make connections that will continue well beyond the workshop through email and ongoing support meetings online.

Facilitators in this session range in MOO experience and applications from the foremost experts in MOO wizardry, to classroom teachers, to specialists in individualized online tutoring, and all have worked together previously in presenting professional instruction online.
