One of our main goals in the GES is to create goodwill and camaraderie among students in the English department. Due to the broad range of classes and degrees offered, we may spend two or more years of our lives with people that we never have the opportunity to meet and get to know. The GES tries to provide opportunities for all students, regardless of areas of specialty, to get to know their peers, particularly in an out-of-classroom environment. Networking is an important skill thatwe can begin to develop through our involvement in the GES.
However, GES also provides several benefits to you, to the department, and to the community as well. The GES provides you with resources to aid in your professional development by creating relationships with other departments throughout the university. The GES hosts the Wordscape readings by creative writing students in the English department. We also see the value in giving back to the community by conducting community outreach projects, such as the Christmas Books-for-Tots program. These are just a few of the projects that we are involved in!
Whether you choose to participate by attending events or by volunteering some of your time and talents to one of our worthwhile projects, remember that the GES is your organization. Its ultimate success or failure depends on you? I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings and events.
