Martine has connected.
WilliamHD arrives from Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "hi folks"
Martine says, "Hi Bill"
Sally says, "Hi Bill and Martine"
Martine says, "Hi Sally nice to meet you"
WilliamHD says, "Hi Sally, we are from WIDE...so if you have any questions, fire away"
Sally [to Marine,]: I'm printing your poster as we speak!
Martine says, "which poster? that's cool"
Sally says, "Thanks, Bill. "Understanding Digital filesharing..."
WilliamHD says, "that's a good one to ask Martine about"
Martine says, "OK, let us know if you have questions!"
WilliamHD grins
WilliamHD says, "Are you here still, Dave?"
Sally says, "Bill, I'm printing all of yours as well!"
Sally says, "hope you don't mind"
Martine says, "I hope they are printing out OK: No we don't mind at all; I think it's great"
Sally says, "what a wonderful resouce this set of posters is"
Martine says, "thanks for your kind words!"
WilliamHD says, "that's fantastic"
Sally says, "Yes, they look great so far. I will catch up on my reading over the lunch break!"
Pete arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Pete says, "Howdy!"
Sally says, "I will see you both again later in the day."
Pete says, "hey, sal."
WilliamHD says, "we are hoping that many coversations begin today...so feel free to send us e-mail, etc."
Martine says, "Bye Sally thanks for stopping by"
WilliamHD says, "hi Pete"
Martine says, "Hi Pete!"
Sally leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Pete says, "Anybody have any questions yet? Any MOO help needed? "
Martine says, "I'm doing OK; not an experienced MOO user, but doing OK, thanks for asking. :)"
WilliamHD says, "not so far...I have been using the old school telnet commands to get around 'cause I haven't used the gui much"
WilliamHD says, "happy to see they still work"
WilliamHD smiles
Martine says, "Bill how did you smile did you press "emote""
WilliamHD says, "yeah"
Pete says, "Yes, we've got affordances both old and new!"
Martine says, "and then type "smile?""
Pete says, "someone's paging me--I'll be right back."
WilliamHD says, "or just type ":" before something"
Pete leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine smile
Martine smiles
WilliamHD claps
WilliamHD says, "well done"
Martine says, "OK I get it"
WilliamHD says, "you can leave it in normal mode and just use a " to precede a comment and a : to precede an action/emote"
WilliamHD gestures
Paula arrives from Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "hi Paula"
Paula says, "hi bill how are you doing?"
Martine says, "Hi Paula"
WilliamHD says, "welcome to the WIDE center poster session"
Martine says, "Nice to meet you I work with Bill"
Paula says, "hello martine"
Paula says, "yes, you too. fancy poster, looks great"
WilliamHD says, "I heard that you got Joy hooked on idol again"
WilliamHD grins
Paula says, "joy is so easily manipulated!"
Paula says, "of course i'm joking"
metaspencer arrives from Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "Paula graduated from here Martine, and she worked at Matrix"
Pete arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "From MSU?"
Paula says, "ai is nothing. I also got her hooked on some gossip blogs, and THAT is a time drain"
Martine says, "Paula graduated from MSU?"
Paula says, "yes I graduated from msu"
Martine says, "I can't see people's bios it's not refreshing"
WilliamHD says, "Hi Spencer"
metaspencer waves
Martine says, "Hi metaspencer"
Pete [to Martine]: Need help with something?
WilliamHD says, "type 'look' and then the name"
Martine waives back to meta
metaspencer says, "I've gotta say, WIDE has the coolest website and best content of any program I've seen."
WilliamHD says, " try "look me""
WilliamHD says, "why, thank you Spencer"
WilliamHD says, "we appreciate it"
Martine says, "opps"
Martine says, "Yes, thanks Spencer"
metaspencer says, "Seriously: very nice design and amazing content. "
Martine says, "OK now I can see everyone thanks Bill"
WilliamHD says, "we use the Plone CMS under the hood, lightly re-skinned"
Martine says, "Nice design! that's good to hear :)"
WilliamHD says, "and we have lots of great researchers doing interesting work, so the content part comes from those folks"
Paula says, "Bill, could you explain the organization of WIDE, the research going on?"
WilliamHD says, "feel free to browse the posters and ask about any of the projects too"
WilliamHD says, "sure"
DavidS (asleep) has disconnected.
Paula says, "There seems to be several projects with a few "researchers" and sponsers"
metaspencer says, "Yep, I'm looking over the posters now ..."
WilliamHD says, "WIDE is, in some ways, a fairly traditional research center as far as university research centers go..."
WilliamHD says, "but as you know, we don't have many of them in our field or in the humanities"
DavidS has connected.
Martine says, "Hi Dave!"
DavidS leaves for Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "WIDE was funded by a strategic partnership grant from the MSU foundation initially, and we seek projects that both advance knowldege in digital writing and have the potential for further funding"
DavidS arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Hi Dave!"
WilliamHD says, "Jim Porter, Jeff Grabill, and I are the co-directors"
Martine says, "sorry to interrupt you Bill, excuse me"
WilliamHD says, " various faculty and grad students affiliate with the center on a project-by-project basis"
WilliamHD says, "like Dave! for example"
Martine says, "exactly"
Paula says, "Sounds like MSU is invested in WIDE - that's great"
Martine says, "Dave Sheridan is the assistant director of MSU's writing center"
WilliamHD says, "Martine is our super-duper graduate research assistant"
metaspencer says, "Not sure if anyone present put together the poster on geo-spatial mapping, but I'm wondering what y'all think about 3D interactive maps (such as Google Earth). The interface and visuality of that map seems to borrow from gaming"
Lennie arrives from Session Room 3
Martine says, "we are also working with some faculty from telecommunications"
Lennie waves
WilliamHD says, "I aggree Spencer"
Paula says, "also seems like it might provide a way for grad students to work on projects not confined to a one-term semseter"
WilliamHD says, "Hi Lennie"
DavidS says, "Hi!"
Martine says, "Hi Lennie"
Lennie [to Martine]: Is the note board alright?
Paula says, "dave sheridan, is that you?"
Lennie says, "Hi Everyone."
WilliamHD says, "I work on Grassroots - it is built on top of the Googlemaps API, in fact"
DavidS says, "Hey Paula!"
Martine says, "I don't know about the note board, it probably is OK thanks for asking Lennie"
Pete [to Lennie]: No one's used it yet.
WilliamHD says, "haven't tried it"
Marie arrives from Poster Session Rooms
metaspencer [to WilliamHD]: had no idea. Cool.
WilliamHD says, "does that help Paula?"
Pete says, "I've got a question about the mapping project. . .whom do I ask?"
Lennie says, "Well, the noteboard is for when you all aren't here."
Martine says, "Bill knows about it he works on it but I've tested the beta version"
Martine says, "Bill, Pete wants to ask you about the mapping project"
WilliamHD says, "you can try out Grassroots - it's in a not-quite-public beta mode right now"
WilliamHD says, "http://adalus.wide.msu.edu/~vishal/"
Pete says, "I've always thought that maps were pretty indicative of who's got the power. It's a picture of how someone, most often someone with power and therefore map-making tech, views their world."
Pete says, "So, with digital asset maps, we're taking that power and putting it into the hands of the community, except for one thing. . ."
Lennie says, "I have a question about INK."
DavidS says, "I can talk about Ink"
Martine says, "Dave Sheridan knows about INK"
Martine says, "opps sorry"
WilliamHD says, "Pete, that's precisely the impetus for Grassroots - giving power to community organizations who usually must react to fancy GIS maps commissioned by planning commissions and or corporate organizations"
Pete says, "the initial map, the picture, has to be done with some pretty expensive tech, which means the graphic itself (the map) is still a representation of what the dominant power structure wants to see. Right?"
WilliamHD says, "we wanted them to make maps that are credible and useful in those situations"
Lennie says, "What is the platform or tool you are using for the online game? Is it MOO-based?"
WilliamHD says, "good point!"
DavidS says, "Ink will look alot like the current space we're in"
Lennie [to DavidS]: Is it using enCore or another tool?
WilliamHD says, "Grassroots builds maps on top of the Googlemaps API - so the technology for rendering maps is theirs (and familiar to users)"
Martine says, "Bye the way hello to Marie, do you have any questions Marie?"
RobinE arrives from Poster Session Rooms
DavidS says, "ink will use a browser interface that has part of screen space for chat"
DavidS says, "Ink is being coded from the ground up"
DavidS says, "We've hired a coder who is beginning from scratch"
WilliamHD says, "mapping data - the geocoding to convert addresses, etc. - is technically free...the database is free, but the lookup service is usually a fee-based web service"
Lennie [to DavidS]: That is impressive.
Marie [to Martine]: Just looking around, thanks.
DavidS says, "thanks...it's also scary!"
Pete [to WilliamHD]: so Google is still the source of our visual conception of where we live? A large, corporate entity.
Martine says, "OK Marie let us know if you have questions, Bill and Dave and myself are from WIDE and it's nice to meet you"
Martine says, "And hello to RobinE"
DavidS says, "We're just about to enter alpha testing stage with Ink. So we should have something for folks to test soon."
WilliamHD says, "in part, yes; though googles imagery (e.g. their sat. photos) are from the USGS"
metaspencer says, "Thanks everyone. I'm going to run off to another poster room. These projects inspire. "
Martine says, "By Spencer"
RobinE [to Martine]: Greetings
metaspencer leaves for Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "thanks spencer"
Lennie [to DavidS]: Well, I am very interested, so let me know.
Martine smiles at RobinE
DavidS says, "we"
Pete [to WilliamHD]: I'm not trying to be argumentative--I'm just interested in how far a map-making project can go with regard to distributing power.
Lennie says, "I'm going to see how things are going in the Main Entrance. Hate to run."
Lennie leaves for Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "we are too...that's the research question behind Grassroots"
WilliamHD says, "or one of them, at least"
Pete [to WilliamHD]: Very cool. Very cool, indeed. And you've got your own programmer, I see?
WilliamHD says, "if you'd like to try it, send me an e-mail and I will send yo a login and pass"
Pete says, "I will! How is WIDE funded? Actually, I can probably just browse around the site and figure that one out. . ."
WilliamHD says, "yeah, we have a developer working on it...and I have worked on some of it too"
RobinE [to WilliamHD]: Who would have thought we could use all of this technology for writing?
Paula [to DavidS]: what is your timeline for ink?
Martine says, "Pete: the funding isn't that obvious from the webpage"
DavidS says, "Alpha testing = next few weeks; beta this summer; full launch and of Aug"
WilliamHD says, "WIDE received initial funding from the MSU foundation, and we now seek funding from both traditional research-related sources such as govt. agencies and also from contract-based projects"
RobinE leaves for Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD says, "we write a lot of proposals!"
DavidS says, "Paula: Dean's web design class might be doing some of the supplemental graphic assets for us"
WilliamHD will be back, his daughter is tugging him
Paula [to DavidS]: are you still keeping up with your Detroit research?
Martine says, "Pete, I was speaking about funding but it wasn't working are you still there?"
DavidS says, "Paula: what's the command for talk to someone"
Pete [to Martine]: I'm here. Let 'er rip!
Paula says, "just type to username"
Martine says, "Anyway, Bill and the other co-directors also work on other projects"
Martine says, "that bring in money"
Martine says, "ANd the grad students also work on these"
Paula says, "to anyone who knows, how do you whisper? "
Martine says, "Like Bill is doing work for TNE -- teachers for a new era"
Martine says, "And he is also working with MSU's affirmative action"
Pete [to Paula]: type "whisper "insert stuff here" to username"
Martine says, "And we've worked for NCTE"
Martine says, "and then a big publishing company"
Martine says, "we call it "client work""
DavidS [to Paula]: "a little Detroit stuff, most in relation to a project focused on re-thinking public rhetoric in light of multimodal rhetoric"
Martine says, "it's separate from the research"
Pete [to Paula]: here's precisely what I typed: whisper "this is what I'm talking about" to Paula
DavidS [to Paula]: "what are you working on"
Martine says, "well not really, because we use that as a platform to do research sometimes"
Paula says, "thank you, pete"
WilliamHD is back
Pete [to Martine]: So folks come to you, or you solicit business. . .how do people find out about you?
Martine says, "Hi Bill I was telling Pete a lot about the client work"
Paula [to WilliamHD]: bill I'd be interestd in hearing more about your "visualizing composition" poster and what you've learned from the students' diaries so far
Pete says, "and do the faculty members also hold appts in academic depts, or is WIDE full time?"
Martine says, "WIDE is an appointment but they all are also appointed as faculty in WRAC"
Martine says, "writing rhetoric and american cultures"
Martine says, "Bill is teaching one class this semester and Jeff is teaching three classes"
Pete says, "cool."
WilliamHD [to Paula]: that's a fun project - we are going to be doing follow-up interviews for that beginning next week
Martine says, "Jim Porter is aslo appointed as the writing specilist for the college of arts and letters"
Pete [to Martine]: And what about you? Is your grad appointment an assistantship?
Martine says, "Last year Jeff also held an appointment as director of professional writing"
Martine says, "Yes my grad appointment is an assistantship: I'm on 3/4 time"
WilliamHD [to Paula]: the headline so far is that students have rich literate lives in terms of breadth and depth of reading and writing that do not involve school-sponsored projects
Martine says, "It's working out very well I am very, very fortunate I think"
Pete [to Martine]: That's nice.
Martine says, "thanks Pete :)"
WilliamHD [to Paula]: in other words, the writing they do for us is the scant tip of a very large iceberg
WilliamHD says, "we always suspected that, of course, but now we have some pictures of it"
Pete [to Martine]: I work half-time as a grader. The benefit is that I'm an online student, and so my work is online as well. I never have to leave home (though sometimes i wish I could).
Paula [to WilliamHD]: that makes sense.
DavidS leaves for Poster Session Rooms
DavidS arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Paula [to WilliamHD]: yes great idea to construct such a study, must be lots of fun, too, with studnets so involved with facebook and other social writing spaces
DavidS leaves for Poster Session Rooms
DavidS arrives from Poster Session Rooms
DavidS leaves for Poster Session Rooms
DavidS arrives from Poster Session Rooms
WilliamHD [to Paula:]: the interviews will involve showing some of the visualziations to the students and using those as the basis for further analysis of their composing practices
Marie leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Pete I'm having problems talking to you"
Pete [to All_]: Remember that our first synchronous sessions start in just a few minutes. I hope everyone will be attending.
Paula [to WilliamHD]: did you see the dailey show a fe days ago -- funny piece about facebook and exaggerated claims of social connectedness
Martine says, "OK now it works"
Martine says, "sorry about that"
WilliamHD says, "with a special emphasis on technologies used, locations & relationships they write within, etc."
Pete says, "Well, I am problematic."
Martine says, "Pete did you say you were a student?"
WilliamHD says, "yeah, that's been in the news lately here too"
Paula [to WilliamHD]: thanks, bill. i'll be trying to follow your research
Pete says, "Yes. I'm an online student in Technical Communication and Rhetoric at Texas Tech University."
Pete says, "Second-year phd."
Martine says, "And that is working out well for you?"
WilliamHD says, "WIDE did a proposal about Facebook, but the initial one hasn"
Martine says, "I used to teach online at Lansing COmmunity COllege"
WilliamHD says, "'t been funded"
Paula [to WilliamHD]: good luck
Pete says, "Quite well. The faculty's great, my classes are cool, and I get to spend time with my wife and kiddoes."
WilliamHD says, "tell Timmy I said hey"
Pete says, "I should be done with my coursework by August or so."
WilliamHD [to Paula]: are you going to Chicago?
Paula says, "sure thing. well-designed and interesting posters"
Martine says, "Pete are you going to CCCC's?"
Pete says, "Not this year. I've been for the last two years, and I think I'll be there next year. But not this time around. You going?"
Paula [to WilliamHD]: no I was planning too, but we have 9 month old now and my spouse decided to go to amsterdam during the week i am suppose to be in chicago
Martine says, "Yes, as I was saying earlier as well I like teaching online because when my kids were little I could be home"
Paula [to WilliamHD]: sorry i will miss seeing all of you though.
WilliamHD says, "Martine, we should do a news item soon about WIDE at CCCC and ATTW, in case folks want to check out some of this work"
Martine says, "and yes I'm going to CCCC because I can drive it's only 5 hours"
Pete [to Martine]: Ah. Of course. It's a bit further for me, I'm afraid.
Martine says, "And yes, I will do that Bill but we are also having a BIG conference"
WilliamHD applauds 9 month olds! and 12 month olds
Martine says, "don't forget"
WilliamHD says, "oh yeah"
Paula leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "we are having a HUGE conference in APril"
Martine says, "not big in size, but big in names"
Pete [to Martine]: I live near Houston, so my drive time would be. . .um. . .8 years.
Martine says, "8 years or hours?"
WilliamHD says, "that is a long drive indeed"
Martine says, "yikes!"
Pete says, "Years. Texas is big."
WilliamHD smiles
Martine says, "very funny"
Martine says, "i like driving though"
Pete says, "I have to drive to Lubbock each year for a two-week seminar. It takes 9.5 hours. No kidding. All in-state."
Martine says, "well MI is the same - to go to say MI tech is 10 hours"
Martine says, "ha!"
Pete says, "You got me! "
WilliamHD [to Pete]: I am sorry I had to duck away...did I answer all of your questions about Grassroots and/or WIDE?
Martine says, "You guys I have to go I'll be back later have to go jogging"
Martine says, "see you later"
Martine says, "by Pete"
WilliamHD says, "bye Martine"
Martine says, "talk to you later"
Pete [to WilliamHD]: You sure did. And now it's my turn to duck away. I've got to chekc on one of the other sessions.
WilliamHD says, "wish me luck on my audition"
DavidS says, "bye martine"
Pete says, "Good talking with you, Martine! later."
Martine says, "GOOD LUCK BILL Bill is auditioning as a juggler for the LUGnuts basball team"
Pete leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "bye"
Martine says, "this time i mean it"

DavidS says, "jeff!"
DavidS says, "i didn't recognize you!"
thirty_third_Guest says, "it took me the first hour-long session to download the java update over my phone line"
DavidS says, "oh no..."
thirty_third_Guest says, "typical. I'm chap"
thirty_third_Guest says, "cheap that is"
DavidS says, "has a few comments about Ink in the morning"
DavidS says, "had""
thirty_third_Guest says, "oh yeah, like what?"
DavidS says, "mostly inquiries about when it will be up"
DavidS says, "expressions of interest"
thirty_third_Guest says, "nothing more fun, as in "the logic of the game is fundamentally flawed""
RobinE arrives from Poster Session Rooms
DavidS says, "ha!"
Locke arrives from Poster Session Rooms

Locke says, "howdy, Jeff"
RobinE waves to Locke
beckster arrives from Poster Session Rooms
RobinE [to thirty_third_Guest]: Jeff I am reviewing your poster now.
thirty_third_Guest says, "Ah, I am the thirty-third guest. that is good to know"
Martine arrives from Poster Session Rooms
DavidS says, "Martine!"
Martine says, "Hi folks"
Martine says, "Hi Dave!"
Martine says, "how's it going in here does anyone have any questions?"
Martine says, "No big deal I just wanted you to come in so I went and got you"
Martine says, "They were just starting to ask"
RobinE says, "The WIDE project sounds fascinating."
Martine says, "But I was talking to Ansel and his langguage arts teachers might be interested in using INK"
beckster nods...would love to be able to come to the conference.
thirty_third_Guest says, "thanks Robin"
Martine says, "Hi RobinE -- we have a nuch of projects going it's true"
Martine says, "bunch I meant to say"
Martine says, "He 33 guest"
Martine says, "hi 33 guest I meant"
thirty_third_Guest says, "33 guest is jeff grabill, martine. i finally made it"
RobinE [to Martine]: I understood. Do the projects ever cross each other?
Martine says, "Hi jeff that's what I thought!"
thirtieth_Guest arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Yes the projects intersect often - but does everyone know that Jeff Grabill is here as a guest and he is a Co-Director of the center"
Martine says, "so maybe guest 33 can answer?"
Martine says, "Because Bill was here earlier but he's auditioning for the Lugnuts as a juggler right now"
RobinE [to thirty_third_Guest]: OK, so guest 33, can you tell us a little more about the WIDE project?
Martine says, "Robin I'ms sorry did I answer your question"
thirty_third_Guest says, "the projects intersect quite a bit. Grassroots, for instance, is actually an outgrowth of a project called capital area community information. We saw a need for writing software like grassroots and so made it. We have no idea if it is actually useful, though, so it is starting its own inquiry trajectory"
Joanna arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Hi Joanna"
DavidS [to Joanna]: "hi
Joanna says, "Hi all!"
RobinE [to thirty_third_Guest]: OK, thank you.
Martine says, "I am a graduate research assistant from the Center and Jeff Grabill and Dave Sheridan are here as well and can we answer any questions?"
Joanna says, "Well, Doug Eyeman suggested I talk with Dave about building writing assignments around games."
DavidS says, "well, Joanna, I'm glad you raise that topic..."
DavidS smile
Joanna says, "me, too, Dave."
DavidS says, "Ink creates an immersive environment, which is conducive to having students write within complex rhetorical situations"
RobinE [to DavidS]: David, when creating writing assignments around games, do the students have a chance to play with them first?
DavidS [to RobinE]: "in Ink, students will actually do their assignments in the game
Joanna says, "Ahhhh. I teach basic writing. Can that sort of game be adapted to their work?"
DavidS [to Joanna]: "absolutely
DavidS says, "in fact we hope that Ink will serve writers who have not been well served by existing educational structures"
Joanna says, "terrific. "
DavidS says, "as I think about assignments in Ink, I tend to begin with exigency"
RobinE [to DavidS]: You really have my attention now!
DavidS says, "Ink is an immersive game that uses the metaphor of a city"
RobinE says, "Wow!"
Joanna reaches for bifocals and starts to eyeball the INK poster.
DavidS says, "one place to begin is to think about social exigencies that emerge within the world of ink"
DavidS says, "players respond to exigencies within the game world, deciding the appropriate response (essay, poster, webpage, etc."
Joanna gasping in awe of INK
RobinE [to DavidS]: This sounds like a great activity for technical writing
Joanna says, "I really like this--can i get a copy of ink to play with?"
DavidS [to RobinE]: "it certainly would include technical writing
DavidS [to Joanna:]: "Ink will be publically available through the web
RobinE [to DavidS]: Is the INK product being mass marketed or do you need a test market?
Joanna says, "great. When?"
DavidS says, "Ink will be browser-based, and will look a little like the encore moo you're in right now"
DavidS says, "we begin alpha testing soon"
Joanna says, "Do you have an interactive demo?"
DavidS says, "beta testing over the summer and full launch scheduled for fall"
thirty_third_Guest says, "David, where are your plans for some sort of evaluation--ok, so alpha release is soon--can people volunteer to be evaluation sites in various ways?"
RobinE [to DavdS]: I bet our tech writing director would be interested in this product.
Martine says, "Yes Dave can people email you if they want to test INK?"
Martine says, "Are you taking a list?"
Joanna says, "I can see it being used in a variety cross-curricular situations. "
DavidS says, "at the beta phase, folks will be invited to test drive"
RobinE [to DavidS]: Where do I sign up?
Joanna says, "me too"
DavidS says, "initially we'll be looking to identify a few classes to invite into the game with a bit of support"
DavidS says, "folks who want to keep updated can check out our website and blog: writing.msu.edu/ink"
DavidS says, "I can let folks know as soon as we have something playable"
DavidS says, "I find I'm unable to type fast enough!"
DavidS smiles
Martine says, "Good point, and also the WIDE website posts news items regularly wide.msu.edu"
RobinE [to DavidS]: I will keep watching out for it.
Martine says, "When INK is being testing I will for sure post news items on that"
DavidS [to RobinE]: "to answer an earlier question, Ink will be distributed through a creative common license
DavidS says, "folks who want to install the code base will be able to"
doug_E arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Hi Doug how's it going?"
RobinE [to DavidS]: OK. This sounds like a product to present at next year's ATTW
doug_E [to Martine]: going well, good to see you here
DavidS [to RobinE]: "good suggestion
Martine says, "RobinE are you presenting at this year's ATTW?"
doug_E says, "this looks like the place to be :)"
RobinE [to Martine]: Not this year. Chicago is a little too much for me.
Martine says, "thanks for saying that Doug you are very kind"
DavidS says, "folks might also be interested to know that we're presenting at the f2f CW2006 and are hoping to bring participants into the game"
Charlotte arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Well I am going this year because it is very close"
Martine says, "Hi Charlotte"
Charlotte says, "Hi Martine is this your poster?"
Martine says, "I am the research assistant but there are actually something like ten posters"
fourteenth_Guest arrives from Poster Session Rooms
fourteenth_Guest leaves for Poster Room 1
Martine says, "Charlotte, some of the other folks doing research per the posters are here so see if you have any questions or anything"
Martine says, "Like Jeff is here and he's a Co_director of the center, he is working on the grassroots mapping project for one"
Martine says, "and then Dave Sheridan is here, he's working on INK"

Charlotte says, "ah I see it comes up linked at a URL with msu. I will copy that and look at it another time in leisure. I have to fly over most of the posters since I am supposed to sit in the Bar/Grill for entertainment...ha."
RobinE leaves for Poster Session Rooms
doug_E [to Martine]: where's Jeff?
Joanna says, "Hey jeff, I'm going to be using Wayfaring with my basic Writing Students next week. I enjoyed looking at Grassroots."
Martine says, "Jeff is guestt 33"
Shaun arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "Jeff are you here?"
Charlotte leaves for Poster Session Rooms
thirty_third_Guest says, "yeah, I was talking to my 4 year old"
Martine says, "Hi Shaun"
Martine says, "How is Jackson?"
Shaun says, "HOwdy"
doug_E [to thirty-third]: Guest you should probably click on the options button and set your name to something a bit less anonymous...maybe something like, oh, Jeff :)
thirty_third_Guest says, "joanna, if you could drop me a line about how your students use wayfaring, I would appreciate it"
thirty_third_Guest says, "doug takes such good care of my laziness :-)"
>> thirty_third_Guest is now known as grabill_[Guest].
Martine says, "Doug how do you do the [to Doug] do you have to type it in manually?"
Joanna says, "will do. we're going to be uploading to a world map and attach a paragraph that they wrote of their memory of the first place where they lived."
doug_E [to Martine]: yes, just type to name followed by the message (but make sure you don't have say checked)
Martine smiles @ doug
doug_E [to Joanna]: that sounds like a really interesting assignment
Paula arrives from Poster Room 3
Paula leaves for Poster Room 1
Martine [to Dave] anyway, Dave, Ansel's language arts teacher just got her Masters @ MSU in critical studies in the teaching of Enlglish and so she'd probably be a good choice for high school use although it appears you will have no shortage of folks willing to play with INK
Joanna says, "it is, and it came from several bloggers--I put them (ideas) together. The assignment begins with writing a poem called "Where I'm From.""
DavidS [to Martine]: "sounds like a good tip
DavidS [to Martine]: "make sure i don't forget this
Martine says, "her brother in law teacher men in america at WRAC"
Martine says, "and her husband is a sicence prof at msu"
doug_E [to Joanna]: sounds like an interesting convergence of media and communications that you synthesized -- and that's the kind of activity that interests me too...
Martine says, "so she's a good connection - has 8th grader do a parody, a visual parody for an assignment"
Martine says, "very cool person"
doug_E seems to be very elliptical today...
doug E . o O ( ... )
Martine says, "[to Joanna] are you teaching 1st year writing?"
Joanna says, "And, Doug, we began with collages. Real collages that depicted their interests which we are now scanning onto their web pages. Martine, I teach the first level (paragraphs to essays) of basic writing."
Shaun [to grabill_[Guest]]: [Guest] Hi Jeff, Shaun Slattery here
grabill_[Guest] says, "hey sean"
doug_E [to Joanna]: I like that -- very multimodal. Nice.
Shaun [to grabill_[Guest]]: neat project
fourteenth_Guest leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "The assignments you describe Joanna sound very creative - I bet the students love those assignments"
grabill_[Guest] says, "thanks, sean. what are you up to now?"
Joanna says, "Thanks. I've been pulling it together piece by be over the years--the map program helped me give it some direction."
Shaun [to grabill_[Guest]]: [Guest] I hired on at DePaul U this year, I'm teaching here and finishing up at RPI
Martine says, "JOanna have you been teacher FYW for a long time? I taught it for 5 years at a local community college. I liked teaching that class much."
Martine says, "OK, I looked at your description Joanna, cool"
grabill_[Guest] says, "I knew you were in chicago. bill brings some of your work into our discussions fairly frequently. so you need to set of a wide affiliate in chicago now"
Joanna says, "Martine, Many love the assignments, but I have to be honest and say that many are confused because I'm not teaching predictable, dull five-paragraph themes with three major supports which I review and they correct for a grade."
Martine says, "Do you have them do blogging in the classroom?"
Joanna says, "yes!"
Martine says, "What are the classrooms like - are they computer labs?"
Shaun [to grabill_[Guest]]: I didn't quite follow your last sentence, Jeff
doug_E [to Joanna]: I'm totally familiar with that confusion :)
grabill_[Guest] says, "sorry. trying to do six things at once. I am pushing you to find some money at depaul to set up a related center so we can collaborate. selfish sentiment on my part ;-)"
doug_E [to Shaun]: Jeff said you should set up a center like WIDE--you can hire me there next year.
Martine says, "[to Joanna} last year when I taught first year writing we also blogged. The students seemed to really enjoy that"
Shaun [to grabill_[Guest]]: selfish but shared. I'd love to collaborate
Joanna says, "yes! But you guys , my father has just called me and I need to chat with him for a few minutes. He's got dementia and I need to go--but please let's keep intouch. I'll be back at the conference in fifteen minutes. Sorry!"
Martine says, "[to Doug] are you already on the job market?"
doug_E [to Martine]: not till later this year (I hope)
Martine says, "by Joanna"
Martine says, "[to Doug] don't have to stay local?"
Shaun [to grabill_[Guest]]: I'll be coming to the MSU conference in April, maybe we can make a point to discuss there
rylish_[Guest] arrives from Poster Session Rooms
rylish_[Guest] leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Joanna leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "[To Shaun] Are you coming to the conference? cool I will ge to meet you"
grabill_[Guest] says, "absolutely, sean. that is what we are hoping for with this conference. some dedicated time to talk and plan"
Shaun says, "Hey Martine, I checked out your poster too"
Martine says, "BTW Shaun the discounted rooms are only available until March 5 (advertisement) but it's true"
Martine says, "Do you mean digital file sharing?"
Martine says, "[to Shaun] DO you know Bill?"
Shaun says, "BIll's on my committee at RPI"
Shaun says, "and we've done numerous projects together"
Martine says, "He's also on my committee, same here,we've done a few projects together"
doug_E [to Martine]: nothing is known about that at this time
Martine says, "I'm a bit co-dependent on him at the present moment "
Martine smiles
Shaun [to Martine]: yes, the filesharing poster
Martine says, "Shaun what did you think of the filesharing poster?"
Martine says, "Doug - OK I will talk to about that in a bit"
Shaun [to Martine]: I'd like to develop a course at DePaul soon called 'Using other Peoples Work: Sampling, Citing, Plagiarism, and the Law'
beckster leaves.
Shaun [to Martine]: so your work is of great interest
mattbarton arrives from Poster Session Rooms
Shaun [to martine:]: and I'm glad to see someone's looking at re-use as a creative endeavor -- writing
Martine says, "Shaun I am with you there - the issue with curriculum needing to address writing in digital environements - plaigiarims, fair use, intellectual property issues - I think we need to focus on it"
Shaun [to Martine]: the more I think about it, the weirder a concept plaigiarism is
Martine says, "Shaun, How do you think plagiaism intersects with the law?"
Martine says, "Because like in Canada they have moral rights - a law where you have to credit the author, but the US doesn't have it"
Martine says, "I guess the class you speak of would separate out the issues"
mattbarton leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Shaun [to Martine]: in my study of tech writers in action, they 'plagiarize' all the time, but because it's all for one corporate document and the auth
Martine says, "Yes Shaun, exactly -- I've learned to reuse lately as a matter of survival basically"
Shaun [to Martine]: well, it's not really plagiarism because they're writing on behalf of the company
Martine says, "But what I was reading last night was that in Canada even forms are copyrighted"
Martine says, "Well yea it's work for hire so the company is considered the author"
Shaun [to Martine]: the company is the author underwhich they're subsumed and IT owns the copyright
Martine says, "exactly"
Shaun [to Martine]: so you can plagiarize from your peers, but not your competitors
Martine says, "So in that context it's perfectly acceptable and expected to plagiarize"
thirtieth_Guest leaves for Poster Session Rooms
Martine says, "But then you have to draw the line on what "plagiarism" is"
Shaun [to martine,]: re: your question of plagiarism & law, have you looked into that relationship? (I've not)
Locke says, "plagiarism is not illegal"
Martine says, "Yes, I am interested in that -- because plagiarism is an ethic, not a law but I wonder if in the US we should have the moral rights laws like the UK does and Canada - because the underneath the ethic would be a law somewhere"
Martine says, "I care more about getting credit for what I write than I care about what people use"
Shaun [to Martine]: ooh, I don't know about UK & Canada
Locke nods Martine on the ethical aspect
doug_E [to Martine]: I'm going to head to the Auditorium for the keynote --talk to you later
Martine says, "I am studying international law this semester so it's on my mind BYE DOUG"
Shaun says, "ooh, it's almost keynote time"
Martine says, "I am doing research on a possible international Fair Use Doctrine -- there is not one"
Martine says, "Yea I gotta go too see you later"
Locke leaves for Poster Session Rooms
doug_E [to Martine]: remind me to tell you about how Brazil deals with moral outrage in terms of how the law works. It's really interesting.
