"Facebook, Online Student Networking, and Strategically Designed Student Selves." Spencer Schaffner, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

-- Start log: Saturday, February 18, 2006 10:07:42 am English MOO time --

Sally says, "It is my pleasure to introduce Dr. Spencer Schaffner of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign ..."
metaspencer checks his Facebook profile
Sally says, "Who will be presenting "
Sally says, ""Facebook, Online Student Networking, and Strategically Designed Student Selves." "
Sally says, "Dr. Schaffner ..."
metaspencer displays slide #2 on web:
metaspencer says, "Thanks Sally. Very kind."
metaspencer says, "Let me know, Shaun, when you're all set for the next slide."
Shaun says, "I'm set"
metaspencer displays slide #3 on web:
metaspencer says, "And this slide is pretty much for folks who don't know much about Facebook. Let me know when you're set for the next slide and/or if you wanna chat about this content."
Shaun says, "I'm pretty familiar w/ social networking... have a Facebook & Myspace account myself, so I can follow along"
Robbin arrives from Conference Center Lobby
metaspencer says, "Cool. Let's check out the first film, then."
metaspencer displays slide #3 on web:
metaspencer says, "HI Robin. If you wanna keep the content in the window for later use, just click the little radio button at the bottom."
Shaun says, "I'm still seeing slide 2"
metaspencer displays slide #4 on web:
Shaun says, "got it"
Robbin [to metaspencer]: "Hi Spencer. thanks"
cball arrives from Conference Center Lobby
metaspencer displays slide #4 on web:
metaspencer says, "sorry if that messed up your viewing of the film, but w/ new arrivees I need to refresh the page ..."
metaspencer [to cball]: are you able to view the film?
cball [to metaspencer]: yessir! and sorry i was late.
Shaun says, "yep, that was great"
metaspencer [to cball]: no worries; just glad it's workig for ya
metaspencer says, "So, any thoughts?"
Shaun says, "I'm impressed w/ how self-aware the students are about their use of Facebook"
Shaun says, "they seem very aware of doing 'identity work'"
Sally says, "Yes, and their interest in knowing the "rules.""
Shaun says, "yes, that was interesting"
metaspencer says, "These are edited clips, but it is something they think a lot about"
cball nods
metaspencer says, "display 5 on web"
Shaun says, "how do I do that?"
metaspencer displays slide #5 on web:
Shaun says, "heh, got it"
metaspencer says, "(oops. sorry 'bout that)"
Robbin says, "Facebook is clearly addictive....in a good way""
Shaun says, "yes, the frequency of use is amazing"
cball says, "i was interested in the presentation issues, but the time issues! that's the part I don't get."
Joanna arrives from Conference Center Lobby
metaspencer displays slide #5 on web:
metaspencer waves to Joanna
Shaun says, "what do you mean cheryl?"
Shaun says, "about time issues?"
Robbin says, "They are always online and always checking their facebook to see what's new. It reminds me of an ongoing lunchroom""
metaspencer [to cball]: What aspects of the presentation issue interest you?
cball says, "it's fascinating that they are into technology that requires them to go to it (what's the opposite of push?)"
cball says, "i'd never have the time to do that. hate doing my online classes in CMSes as it is! but the students DO seem to love it."
metaspencer says, "It has been described as very 'STICKY' (re: the opposite of push)"
Shaun says, "ahh.. that's not so surprising to me... rabid text-messagers use a pretty darn inconvenient technology to stay in touch w/ friends"
cball figures she's on email (a push technology?) too often to get into facebook
metaspencer grins
cball laughs at the idea of sticky. but takes it under advisement.
metaspencer says, "Shall we watch the next film?"
cball says, "sure"
Shaun says, "ok"
metaspencer displays slide #6 on web:
Robbin says, "They feel connected and it is very sticky""
Robbin says, "great""
Joanna says, "okay"
metaspencer says, "I guess "addicted" means "drawn to or something like that""
Shaun says, "these are great"
cball says, "very cool"
Shaun says, "I'm repeatedly impressed by how aware they are of their social practices and the nuances of belonging and exclusivity and who doesn't have 'access'"
cball says, "and yet, aren't there thousands/hundredthousand uesrs?"
metaspencer says, "I was really shocked to learn that Facebook helps students define themselves as "college types""
Robbin says, "And the way they saw a different between high school and college and the role/uses of Face Book""
cball says, "i guess i'm wondering about the supposed exclusivity of their usage."
metaspencer displays slide #7 on web:
cball nods
Joanna says, "yeah, but are they in my group? And is there power in creating as well as belonging to the group?"
metaspencer says, "I think Facebook makes the web small ... or seem small."
Sally [to Spencer]: Do you find facebook more popular with first and second year college students than upper level students?
Shaun says, "given their statements about high school, I think they feel a real sense of place there"
metaspencer says, "I'm only teaching seniors now, and at least 90% have accounts they check daily."
Shaun says, "and letting highschoolers in is like letting them into their 'dorms'"
cball laughs
Joanna says, "I wonder if it prolongs that feeling of being in high school. "
Robbin says, "I only teach freshmen and they are all on facebook""
metaspencer says, "Re: highschool, indeed! And yet, Facebook seems to extend high-school culture through the technology of this e-yearbook."
Shaun says, "i bet highschoolers are aware of and looking forward to getting into Facebook"
Robbin says, "In fact, they often ask me why I'm not on facebook. Spencer, are you on facebook?""
cball [to metaspencer]: apologies if I missed this point, or you're getting to it, but are you using Facebook as part of your classes?
metaspencer says, "Note that it keeps people in touch w/ their high-school friends -- UNLESS those friends don't go to college. So it tiers students and non-students."
Robbin says, "faculty are allowed on facebook""
metaspencer [to Robbin:]: yes, I have a Facebook account, but I don't do much with it.
Shaun says, "I think it reinforces college/not-college identities that already exist"
cball laughs and thinks of her unused Match.com account...lol
metaspencer says, "Campus police at many schools are using Facebook to bust students."
Shaun says, "I've been reading about that"
Robbin says, "My students all connect to the other students in my class. It cracks me up""
cball says omigod!
Shaun says, "my students are very interested in that"
metaspencer says, "And at Syracuse, administrators have Facebook accounts."
cball says, "for what?"
cball says, "or rather, why? to keep in touch with studnets, or to bust them."
metaspencer says, "Surveillance. There has been a huge scandal at Syracuse relating to a student group set up to critique/slander a TA."
cball says, "wow"
Shaun says, "I'm wondering whether/how to use it at a teacher"
Shaun says, "my students really appreciate that i'm online, blog, and available by AIM"
Sally [to Spencer]: I noted the articles you link to on your blog: interesting.
metaspencer says, "There are profs on my campus who have full-blown Facebookk accounts, using it just like students do (more or less). "
Shaun says, "but I don't know if I would be an "intruder" in facebook"
Joanna says, "I'm fascinated by the whole Syracuse episode and what it offers to us as instructors and students in terms of privacy versus publicity."
Robbin says, "In my course we talk about the fact that in the future, politicians are going to have to account for what they put up on facebook as college students""
metaspencer shares a URL. (http://https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/Syracuse%20Flier.pdf)
Joanna says, "thanks for the link."
metaspencer says, "Shall we watch the final short film?"
Joanna says, "sure"
Sally says, "you bet"
metaspencer displays slide #8 on web:
cball says, "yes"
Shaun wonders if that's spencer playing the bass riff that introduces each film
metaspencer slapping that bass, combing the non-existent goatee
Joanna says, "I don't have the film yet. Is there something I should be doing on the screen to get it to appear?"
Sally says, "Mine is slow to download, too, Joanna"
cball says, "i'[m about half-way through watching, on cable modem"
Sally says, "Did you click on the graphic and see that it is downloading?"
Joanna says, "what graphic?"
metaspencer says, "Hmm... here is a link to all three films so you can view/click"
metaspencer shares a URL. (http://https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/films/)
Joanna says, "thanks."
Robbin [to metaspencer]: when you shared the URL I lost the video
cball [to Robbin]: it goes behind your browser window
metaspencer says, "Rats. Sorry about the mix up. I'll put the slide up again."
metaspencer displays slide #8 on web:
metaspencer says, "Shaun, were you able to view the film?"
Shaun says, "yep"
cball says, "me too"
Shaun says, "whispers "i'm at school, rockin' the high-speed""
cball lol
metaspencer says, "I'm sort of amazed that there is so much "facebooking" going on, but it's a social taboo to talk about it!"
cball says, "yeah, i missed why its taboo."
cball says, "is it because it implies you're "Stalking?""
Shaun says, "they don't want to appear 'creepy' by showing they've been looking people up"
cball says, "ah."
metaspencer says, "Even though "everyone is doing it" and, clearly, that is what Facebook is largely for: research."
cball says, "i was kinda surprised by their use of the word stalking. not surprised, i guess, but, um, weirded out?"
Shaun says, "I guess I got my question answered about whether/how to Facebook as a prof"
Sally says, "ha! Like match.com or eharmony"
cball nods to sally
metaspencer says, "RE: "stalking" No kidding. It makes stalking seem so harmless."
cball says, "exactly."
cball says, "and THAt is creepy"
Shaun says, "that's a good point"
metaspencer displays slide #9 on web:
Sally says, "might try that slide again, spencer"
metaspencer displays slide #9 on web:
cball says, "it's funny that they'd talk about not wanting to talk about rading facebook because..."
cball says, "...that's exactlly the opposite of folks who post comments to folk's blogs, i think"
metaspencer says, "The 100 or so students I've discussed Facebook with all seem to have the idea that what they put on their Facebook account is "safe" -- even w/ X million users enrolled."
cball says, "to show that they are reading. (although it always creeps me out to find out who's reading my blog bcause it's not really acadedmic at all)"
cball says, "yeah, same principle with my blog, even tho i know better."
Shaun says, "spencer, my students also see Facebook as 'private' "
cball pretends she's an osterich with her head in the sand.
Shaun says, "same w/ Myspace"
metaspencer says, "Following cball, I'm wondering if others see connections between Facebook and blogs, even though they are quite different technologically embodied forms?"
cball says, "i guess i see the connections as putting yourself out there publicly without a guaranteed audience"
Shaun says, "there's something about Facebook that makes it feel like it's behind some closed door, unlike blogs"
Sally says, "from where does that feeling of privacy arise? text messaging, chat?"
Joanna says, "can I say that facebook is adolescent in all meanings of the word, whereas blogs are open to all."
cball [to Joanna]: can you say more?
metaspencer says, "And Facebook seems much more visual (almost like a flickr account) than many highly textual blogs."
Robbin leaves for Conference Center Lobby
Joanna says, "uhuhuh, I'll try. Blogs are not (unless by choice or assignment) organized around one population, and Facebook seems to be geared to college students, those who are 18-21."
cball says, "that seems accurate. one of the reasons I did 't really like blogs at first (lack of visual/design)"
Shaun says, "blogs feel more textual and narrative (like Livejournal)"
metaspencer says, "In case you haven't seen it, here is a screenshot of the Syracuse student Facebook group I mentioned earlier ..."
metaspencer shares a URL. (http://https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/syracuse.screenshot.gif)
Shaun says, "I've not seen much "narrative" in Facebook/Myspace"
cball [to metaspencer]: i'm not getting the right URL -- it seems it's automatically putting an extra http in front
Sally shares a URL. (http://https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/syracuse.screenshot.gif)
metaspencer says, "Students tell me they "tell a story" with the photos they put up of themselves. Also, updates (which are a high priority) convey narrative."
Shaun says, "ditto"
cball says, "nope. oh well. i'll use another window :)"
Sally shares a URL. (http://https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/syracuse.screenshot.gif)
Shaun says, "I see"
Joanna says, "I wonder how much of what is communicated visually is understood universally."
Shaun says, "[re: image narrative]"
metaspencer displays slide #11 on web:
Shaun says, "like the recent study of how much email is misunderstood?"
Sally shares a URL. (http:////netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/syracuse.screenshot.gif)
Shaun says, "there it is!"
metaspencer [to Sally]: you got it up there! Thanks!
Shaun says, "dear god"
cball [to Shaun]: that's what my friend kristin is working on -- the rhetorical listening possibilities of design in websites like myspace
Shaun says, "I've seen her work"
metaspencer [to Shaun]: Yep. The TA's name and face are both published at Inside Higher Ed as we "speak" -- along with these comments about her.
Shaun says, "neat stuff"
SabrinaG arrives from Conference Center Lobby
Shaun says, "that's awful"
cball says, "are you serious? they published her name/face?!"
metaspencer waves to SabrinaG
Joanna says, "The thing about facebook is that I feel like we're in someone's dorm room reading/listening to a conversation that we ought not to or don't want--"
Shaun nods to Joanna
metaspencer says, "if you check out Collin Brooke's blog you'll see a long set of debates over the publication, which not only Inside Higher Ed was part of."
cball says, "good. will do."
SabrinaG waves to metaspencer
metaspencer says, "The dorm room analogy is a good one. "
Joanna says, "COllin Brooke and Rebessa Moore Howard have been writing some great stuff this week on the IHE /Facebook/Syracuse incident. "
Shaun says, "a doormroom with the window wide open to the quad"
SabrinaG displays slide #13 on web:
Joanna nodding
metaspencer [to SabrinaG]: if you wanna view the films we all looked at, go to https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/spencers/www/Schaffner.Facebook/films/
Sally says, "thanks, spencer"
metaspencer says, "Oops. Looks like we need to clear out of here. Thanks to everyone for attending."
Shaun says, "yes, very interesting"
Joanna says, "thanks spencer"
cball says, "i'm surprised that I had't heard about the facebook/syracuse incident before this"
metaspencer displays slide #12 on web:
Sally says, "Spencer, thank you so much!"
cball says, "spencer, this was great. thank you!"
Joanna says, "cball, go to Schenectedy Synoche and check it out."
cball says, "oh, one last question for you..."
metaspencer smiles broadly
metaspencer says, "okay, shoot"
cball says, "how/where are you using this rsearch on facebook? "
Shaun says, "Sabrina, could you put that slide back up?"
cball says, "in other words, where can we read more of your work?"
SabrinaG says, "I didn't mean to disturb the session"
Sally good question
Shaun says, "oh, I got confused... nevermind!"
metaspencer says, "I'm working on a larger project about formulaity and innovation, but it's still "in the early stages" as I like to say. If I can get together an article, it'll probably go off to Computers and Writing"
Shaun says, "thanks all "
Joanna leaves for Conference Center Lobby
metaspencer says, "Yep, thanks."
Sally says, "Thank you again, Spencer. I will stop the recorder"
Shaun leaves for Conference Center Lobby
