The Epiphany Project

An Annenberg/CPB - ACW Project

Directed by Trent Batson, Ph.D, Seton Hall University
Co-Principal Investigators:
Steve Gilbert, AAHE;
John O'Connor, George Mason University

The Epiphany Project: this funded project (Annenberg/CPB) continued from July, 1995 to July, 1997. Its goal was to create models of workshops for writing faculty making the transition to teaching with computers. During the Project, directed by Trent Batson and Judy Williamson, co-directed by John O'Connor and Steve Gilbert, 40 sites worked with the project and developed local Epiphany projects. Key ideas were that the changes *mainstream faculty* (as opposed to early adopters) faced were deeper and more involved than either they or their administrators realized. Thus, Epiphany recommended a 3-year time period during which faculty would be supported. (Epiphany video available from Trent Batson, (batsontr@shu.edu)

Epiphany is no longer funded, but does continue as part of the TLT Group,Inc., the teaching, learning, and technology affiliate of the AAHE. Epiphany workshops are now offered about once a month on campuses through the TLT Group. Epiphany workshops are called "Words With Wings." Trent Batson and other Epiphany team members direct the workshops. For information about the TLT Group, Inc. contact or click the TLT link on the AAHE home page.

Growing out of Epiphany is a related project called BANC (Building A New Consensus). Based on the belief that teaching will be rewarded equally with research only when teaching can be peer reviewed in a similar fashion to reearch, BANC is creating a mechanism to support peer review of teaching with technology. This project is just beginning. It will involve Seton Hall University and Dartmouth College, as well as three pilot sites.(batsontr@shu.edu) for more information on BANC.
