Description of
Teaching, Learning, and Technology Roundtable Program
[What follows below is first a brief overview of the AAHE TLTR Program and second a description of the Regional Start-Up Workshops -- including objectives, schedule, options for participation, expected outcomes, and how to get more info.]
I. BACKGROUND -- THE AAHE TLTR PROGRAM
Today most colleges and universities are already effectively using information technology to improve institutional operations, support many kinds of research, and increase *personal* productivity. Many institutions have already made major investments in a technological infrastructure and are beginning to realize that this is an ongoing or rising expense -- maintenance, replacement, and new purchases to "stay current." There is a growing belief that a major commitment to attractive *educational* applications of information technology can improve the quality and accessibility of education for many students and permit an institution to compete more effectively for students and faculty members.
Most colleges and universities already have at least one committee or task group wrestling through a technology planning process. These efforts often lack a coherent conceptual framework, focus too narrowly on the technology rather than the teaching/learning issues, and involve only those already closest to the technology. The usual campus fragmentation -- lack of communication, coordination, and collaboration among the key support services -- undermines the effectiveness and efficiency of efforts to encourage faculty to develop and implement new educational uses of information technology.
The AAHE Teaching, Learning, and Technology Roundtable (TLTR) Program provides a compellingly simple common-sensical approach and the coherent conceptual framework needed to address these issues. Developing a local Teaching, Learning, and Technology (TLT) Roundtable can build better collaboration, communication, and cooperation within a college or university to improve planning, policymaking, and implementation. A local TLT Roundtable can help institutional leaders organize, think about, and select among expensive options -- and develop strategies and specific steps to improve teaching and learning through the integration of information technology.
During the TLTR Program's first year almost 200 institutions began the TLTR process. In July, 1995, the first national AAHE TLTR Start-Up Workshop was held in Phoenix, with more than 160 people in teams from more than 60 colleges and universities. Based on the remarkable success of that event, regional versions of it will be offered.
II. TLTR REGIONAL START-UP WORKSHOPS
A TLTR Regional Start-up Workshop offers training for teams from institutions wanting to develop and launch their own TLT Roundtables. Plenary sessions introduce concepts and examples. Facilitators with Roundtable experience work with peer groups of teams (10-20 registrants per group) on developing plans and materials -- within the TLTR framework tailored to the special needs and characteristics of each institution represented. The AAHE TLTR Institutional Planning Grid and related materials are distributed, and training in their use is provided.
Each team will be helped to develop plans for: o its own TLTR goals & objectives;
o the appropriate composition for its Roundtable and how that Roundtable will work with other organizations within the institution (including academic departments); o a set of campus implementation strategies ("wide/shallow" and "narrow/deep" -- see the AAHE TLTR Institutional Planning Grid); o effective faculty support service combinations; o a directory of local "best practices" of faculty use of information technology, support services and resources to help faculty improve teaching and learning through using information technology (and how to link that directory with those of other Roundtable institutions); and
o a sub-committee structure and workplans for the first year of the local Roundtable.
Your institution will benefit most by sending a team of 3-8 people; but if space permits, larger teams can also be accommodated (see TLTR Guidelines -- available upon request -- for suggestions on team composition).
A. Schedule
Prior to the opening of a Regional TLTR Start-Up Workshop, workshop leaders and facilitators meet and prepare. Regional workshops typically begin at 2:00PM on the first day. The first day's work ends at 5:00PM, immediately followed by a reception. Leaders and facilitators meet after the reception for a quick review of progress and revision of the plans as indicated. The second day begins at 9:00AM and ends with a 4:00PM adjournment. Shortly thereafter, leaders and facilitators review successes and identify areas in need of improvement for future workshops.
B. Options for Participation in AAHE TLTR Regional Start-Up Workshops
HOST INSTITUTION: Each workshop needs a host institution to provide meeting space, related facilities and equipment, food services, etc. A "reasonable number" of individuals from the host institution receive complimentary registrations for the Workshop. Especially if the host is the site of an "experienced" TLT Roundtable, individuals from that Roundtable are encouraged to participate as facilitators (and to be trained for that purpose by TLTR staff).
COLLABORATING (CO-SPONSORING) INSTITUTIONS: In each region we also seek 10 to 20 co-sponsoring or collaborating institutions that can send teams to the Workshop. Registration fees range from $1,500 to $2,500 each for teams of 3 to 15 individuals from these institutions. With the goal of launching and sustaining local TLT Roundtables, training a team from an institution is much more effective than preparing a single campus representative. Each regional workshop is structured to match 2-5 teams from "peer" or nearby institutions together as they work through the training tasks. In addition to developing plans for their own institutions, teams also establish (or extend) collaborative relationships and make specific plans to visit each other's campuses and develop other inter-institutional activities to enhance their local work.
C. Outcomes from AAHE TLTR Regional Start-Up Workshops o Successful first-year planning, development and launch of local TLT Roundtables.
o Support for regional activities and connection with a national network of TLT Roundtables.
