THE NETORIC PROJECT: Have Telnet, Will Travel

By Greg Siering

Real-Time Discussions

The Netoric Project is a series of real-time computer-based discussions, conferences, and workshops for those who use computers in teaching writing. Since the spring of 1993, the Netoric Project has provided the computers and writing community with an ongoing forum for professional development and collaboration. The real- time aspect of Netoric discussions allows for a fast-paced, exploratory counterpart to similar conversations occurring in forums like the e-mail discussion lists MBU-L, ACW-L, and RHETNT-L. In fact, many weekly Netoric topics are drawn from these lists, and our conversations often feed new ideas and energy back into those exchanges.

In addition to regularly bringing together geographically distant colleagues; Netoric also promotes the value of networked communication many of us advance in our own classrooms, including the use of MUDs similar to the one we meet in.

Regular and Special Events Held

Events are held in various rooms of the Netoric Complex on Media MOO. Participants connect to MediaMOO, go to the scheduled room, and talk to each other in real time. To participate, all you need is the ability to telnet (purple-crayon.media.mit.edu 8888) and the MediaMOO Guide for Netoric Guests. As well as special events, Netoric coordinates weekly informal discussions, held on Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time at the Tuesday Cafe.

Information about upcoming Netoric events and topics, the Guide mentioned above, and instructions on how to access logs of previous Netoriic discussions are available via gopher and the World-Wide Web at the following addresses:
